　　With the analysis of the argumentative goals of Stringer’s article Real Bad Tuesday being mentioned in the above,what follows is the analysis of the rhetorical methods that the author uses to support the aforementioned argumentative goal.The first rhetorical method employed by the author is repetition including both repetition of certain words and repetition of some sentences.In order to better persuade the audience of a bad Tuesday experienced,the author has repeatedly used several times of bad Tuesday throughout the whole essay,like“I was having a real bad Tuesday”(147),“That’s the kind of bad Tuesday I’m having”(152),and“No doubt about it!I was having a real bad Tuesday”(153).Furthermore,the inner thoughts of the author has as well used the repetition of sentences,including“Lord,don’t let me do what I’m thinking”(154)and“Lord,don’t let me do it”(155),which can imply the inner panic of the author to some extent.At the same time,the repetition of certain words can be found by the repeated use of the three words“Tall,dark and ragged”in two sentences that“Tall,dark,and ragged,cop money scrunched in his fist”(148)and that“when I spot Tall,Dark,and Ragged heading back my way”(148).The repeated use of these three words can help emphasize the hatred that the guys selling Street News have toward the cop.In addition,the repeated sound of five shots in the sentence“Then I hear PAP!PAP!PAP!PAP!PAP!”(150)can really add to the degree for how the Tuesday is terrible at that time.Apparently,the repeated five shots can unconsciously make one afraid and bring panic to people so as to point out how bad the specific Tuesday is.

　　Secondly,the author has used the rhetorical device called metaphor.The author has metaphorically compared the process for him to sell Street News as the game of playing hide-and-seek because it has spent him quite long time for him to sell it and the time is described in this way in the article as“all morning and most of the afternoon”(147).From this,it can be readily detected of the difficulty for the audience to sell Street News.Another example of the use of metaphor can be found in the sentence“It’s a kind of radar we have”(148).The word“radar”in this sentence refers to the tacit understanding and resonance as have been formed among the Street News sellers.Concerning the use of metaphor,the most impressive one used is in the sentence that“I as good as run,eating up sidewalk in long,rapid strides”(149).It is really hard for one to imagine how fast one is running that can make it looks like eating up sidewalk.There is no doubt that the surprisingly fast speed can be used to imply the efforts have been made by the author to get rid of the cops and he has no choice but to run as fast as possible in order not to be caught.

　　Moreover,the author has used antithesis to describe the terrible Tuesday.The first example of the use of antithesis is the expression that“They know what’s up.They know what I’m there for”(148),which focuses on the depiction of the attitude of the surrounding people.Even though those kids are clear about my purpose,they take no notice about it and they are so indifferent that their only behavior is to“eye me with bemused derision”.In our mind,what those kids have to do is to give a hand to the author so that he can quickly find the ones he is desired for.Thus the indifferent attitude of the kids has also suggested the difficulty for the author to sell Street News in turn.The second example of the use of the antithesis method can be easily seen from the expression that“Their jeans are just a bit too clean.Their sneakers are too fresh”(149),which has show the differences in the appearance of the author and the other ones selling Street News.They can still pay attention to the use of combs and razors while the author has already been too tired and thirsty to care about it at all.

　　Furthermore,simile has also been used by the author in the sentence that“eyes scanning left and right like two satellite dishes”(149).In this sentence,the word“like”is obvious for the identification of the use of simile,which can help understand the concentration of the other guy who is selling Street News the same as the author.The second instance of the use of simile can be found in the sentence that“and it looks like we’re all headed for the same place”(149).The sign“look like”represents the use of simile and here this simile aims to show that the fierce competition exists among the guys that sell Street News.

　　Last but not the least,flashback has also been utilized in the article when the author hears five shots and the sentences in the article are“This has happened to me before.Later one night several years ago in midtown….”(150).Based on the use of this flashback,a fair knowledge can be obtained that the incidence of shooting event is quite common and many people have even died for being shot.
